The two formulas
To add tax: total = price × (1 + rate ÷ 100). To remove tax from a total: price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). The tax amount is the difference between the two.
Worked example
At 7%, a $100.00 price becomes $107.00 with tax, which is $7.00 of tax. Going the other way, $107.00 ÷ 1.07 gives $100.00 before tax.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the tax rate divided by 100 to get the tax, then add it to the price. Or multiply the price by (1 + rate/100) to get the total.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the total by (1 + rate/100). For example, $107 ÷ 1.07 = $100, so the sales tax was $7.
What sales tax rate should I use?
Use the combined state and local rate for the place where the sale is made or delivered. Rates differ by state, county and city, so check your state's department of revenue for the exact figure.
Do all states charge sales tax?
No. A handful of states have no statewide sales tax, though local taxes can still apply in some of them. Rules about what is taxable, such as groceries, clothing or services, also vary by state.
